Somaliland 27th Anniversary Commemorations in Canada, 18 May 2018

The Somaliland Mission in Canada and Somalilanders Community in Canada have jointly organized and held high level events in celebration to Somaliland’s 27th Anniversary with four events in Ottawa, Toronto, and Edmonton cities.

The 27th anniversary of Somaliland was first held at the Park Vincent Massey in Ottawa Canada on Saturday May 5th, 2018. A number of 150 attendees were Somaliland/Canadian citizens, parents, elders, children and Members of Parliament of Canada among all were participant as HON.  Karen McCrimmon, Hon. Chandra Arya, Hon John Frazer. The Somaliland National Anthem was played in the Park. The Somaliland flag was displayed outside and passersby were interested to know about it.

The purpose of celebration in the park was to have a free attendance to the commemoration, to educate our kids and adolescents to have a sense of belonging in this Canadian Communities as Canada is composed of various communities that came together from all over the world so is the Somaliland community.

This was the first time we ever inaugurated in the open air with free food and drinks, national anthem and national songs playing all along the event from 12pm to 8pm. It was also an opportunity to let Canadians passing by to ask about what country does this flag belong to, the answer was: SOMALILAND NOT SOMALIA.

Parents and kids enjoyed so very much. They liked their playing at the nation Anthem and SLN Music.

Comment received from such event must happen every year. This might be a solution for our kids born and raised in Canada from been lost within other cultures of stronger Canadian communities

Also, we were trying to attract Somaliland Friends within the parliamentarian’s members. The attempt was to connect the Member of Parliament and his or her members of constituency. So, we can maintain a closer relationship in order to distinguish Somaliland history and difference from Somalia.

Somaliland Ambassador to Canada Amb Ahmed Osman and Community Representatives had delivered key speeches in all the events. Also, Somaliland Diaspora Agency Chairman Mr. Abdi Abdullahi Hersi attended in the first event at Edmonton while Ms Sahra Mohamed Hashi, Director of Planning & Research of SLDA participated in the Ottawa and Toronto Events on the May 11th and 12th dates respectively.
